There are many reasons why Japan decided to turn into an imperialist power. One reason is that they wanted to expand their empire as the four islands were getting too small for them. Another was that they believed in their own right to expand as they possessed a very "arrogant" attitude towards other nations that neighboured them.
All of this combined with the fact that they would be able to increase the production in their factories with more colonies, were main reasons why they chose to do it.
