Chemical element cadmium has the atomic number 48 and the letter Cd assigned to it. Chemically, group 12 stable metals zinc and mercury are comparable to this soft, silver-white metal. Almost all of its compounds, like those of zinc, exhibit the oxidation state +2, and like mercury, it has a lower melting point than the transition metals of groups 3 through 11.
Since group 12's cadmium and its congeners lack partially filled d or f electron shells in either their elemental or common oxidation states, they are frequently not regarded as transition metals.
Between 0.1 and 0.5 parts per million of cadmium are typically present in the Earth's crust (ppm). Stromeyer and Hermann found it simultaneously in 1817.
