Find the holes of
f(x) = (3x^2+2x-1)/(x^2-1)

just factor them out

f(x)  = (3x - 1) / (x-1)

f (-1) = 3 (-1) - 1 /  -1 - 1

f (-1) = -3-1 / -1 -1

f (-1) = -4/2

f (-1) = 2
