The following day, a succession of defeats led to the effective ending of the revolution. Whites quickly and brutally reasserted their command over Southampton County, destroying roughly three dozen blacks without trials.
Within a few days of the revolution, white moderators in Southampton became increasingly confident that the revolution had been stopped and worked to limit the extralegal slaying of blacks.
Instead, white authorities made sure that the remaining supposed slaves were tried, which also suggested that the white slave owners would obtain compensation from the state for condemned slaves, usefulness that the state did not grow to slave owners who owned suspected rebels destroyed without trials.
Turner himself had evaded whites throughout September and into October when two slaves smeared him nearest to where the revolt began.
