The king we're talking about here was Francis I, who ruled in France from 1515 to 1547. Francis was thoroughly enamored with the Renaissance, and he commissioned architect Gilles le Breton to remake the medieval Palace of Fontainebleau in Renaissance style as seen in Italy. He acquired many works of art and commissioned numerous works of art for the palace. He also convinced the great Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci to come and live in France, giving him the title, “Premier Painter and Engineer and Architect to the King.” Da Vinci lived in France from 1516 till his death in 1519.
