Answer;
-Lung volume is the total volume the air occupy in lung during respiration. It is also known as lung capacity.
-Air pressure is the pressure of the air in the lungs during inhalation and exhalation.
During the process of inhalation, the lung volume expands as a result of the contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles thus expanding the thoracic cavity. Due to increase in lung volume, the air pressure is decreased (Boyle's law) compared to the atmosphere, thus the air enters the airways.
During exhalation the relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles causes a decrease in the lung volume, resulting in increased air pressure in the lungs compared to the atmosphere , thus the air moves out of the airways.
The changes that occur in the lung volume and air pressure in the lungs are responsible for inhalation and expiration.
What is lung volume?
Lung volume refers to the total volume of air that can be accommodated by the lungs.
Air pressure refer to the pressure due to the weight of the air on the lungs.
During inspiration, the lung volume increases and air pressure decreases thus forcing air into the lungs.
During expiration, the lung volume decreases and air pressure increases, thus forcing air out of the lungs.
